Conservation action Our approach

Our approach to mammal conservation

We focus our efforts on action to mitigate current threats using a four-pronged approach to:

  • address deficiencies in data and evidence through developing Innovative Monitoring solutions;
  • identify actions to generate conservation solutions for effective Population Restoration;
  • develop effective mitigation strategies through Conflict Management to promote coexistence between threatened and recovering mammal populations and human interests
  • underpin our work with evidence-based conservation actions.

Strengthening our approach

Our commitment to evidence-based conservation is demonstrated through our role as an Evidence Champion with Conservation Evidence. Our vision to be a catalyst for conservation, and our mission to conserve threatened mammals, is strengthened by adopting the Conservation Standards across all aspects of our work; providing a platform for us to increase our effectiveness and share our strategic planning, evidence-based decision making, impact assessment and adaptive conservation management practices with others.

In our role as an Evidence Champion for Conservation Evidence, VWT received a fantastic score of 9.5/10 in a recent annual review, demonstrating that our work strongly aligns with the criteria in the Conservation Evidence Checklist of evidence use by organisations. We have also provided examples of good practice for organisations applying to be Evidence Champions, helping other organisations to follow our evidence-based approach to conserving rare and threatened species.
