Pine marten conservation strategy produced

The Vincent Wildlife Trust has recently led the completion of a conservation strategy to restore the pine marten to England and Wales.

This strategy is the culmination of many years of work, which has concluded that pine martens are present at low densities in isolated areas of England and Wales, but that populations don’t appear to be recovering from their decline. The document has been developed in collaboration with a variety of stakeholders including statutory bodies, voluntary conservation organisations and consultants, who will help to implement the strategy. The aim of the strategy is to highlight priority areas for research and conservation in England and Wales which will promote the recovery of the pine marten. Current research priorities include determining factors limiting the survival and recovery of marten populations; developing effective monitoring methodologies; promoting targeted creation and expansion of woodland; and continued assessment of the distribution and status of pine martens in England and Wales. The outcome of these priority actions will provide the basis for future plans for pine marten conservation in the UK.
